Assisted living residences on former vicarage land
For many people, remaining at home is difficult because the existing housing stock—houses and apartments—has not been adapted to make this possible. As a result, nursing homes often become the only alternative, even though older people could manage on their own if their homes were better adapted. Former vicarage land is now becoming an arena for entirely new housing concepts that will make it possible to live longer in one’s own home.
Assisted living residences in Alstahaug
In March, construction began in Sandnessjøen in Alstahaug Municipality on 24 new assisted living residences on a property owned by OVF’s wholly owned subsidiary Clemens Eiendom. (CE)
CE has entered into a partnership with KonseptPLUSS, which has specialist expertise and relevant experience in establishing assisted living residences with an associated day centre and a base for home-care services.
Great need
Living in one’s own home for as long as possible is not only in the best interests of the individual; it also eases the pressure on nursing homes and other healthcare institutions in the municipalities, as the number of older people is expected to increase in the years ahead. Projections from Statistics Norway show that by 2035, there will be a need for 70,000 additional full-time equivalent positions in municipal health and care services.
Before the summer, the government presented its «Living Safely at Home Reform», which aims to ensure that older people can live in their own homes for as long as possible, if they are able and willing to do so.
The assisted living residences are intended to help municipalities meet the need for assisted living residences and nursing home places. The projects are to promote integration, dignity and independence for residents, and be sustainable in terms of costs, social conditions and the environment.
Several municipalities
OVF is in dialogue with 60 municipalities across the country where the foundation’s properties are suitable for the development of assisted living residences. “As a government actor, it is highly inspiring to help facilitate this in cooperation with municipalities and relevant businesses,” says Bernt Nordby Skøien, CEO of Clemens Eiendom.
In many ways, the circle has now been completed—the old vicarage estate is being given new life—for the benefit of both individuals and the community.
