Green light for Rådhusgata 1: How the building is changing
The building will receive a renewed façade with two new top floors, a sunny rooftop terrace and public-facing amenities such as a restaurant or shops at street level, in addition to the upgrading of the 10,800 m2 of bright and modern commercial premises. Rådhusgata 1 and Fred Olsens gate 1 make up the commercial building Kontrazten, which will become a complete and highly attractive location for new tenants.
– Here, we can offer attractive, modern office premises in a central location just a few minutes’ walk from Oslo Central Station. In a completely new guise! The address alone really says it all. This is one of Oslo’s most centrally located office buildings, and we are pleased that the permit is now in place, says Bernt Nordby Skøien, Director of Real Estate at Allstad.
With support from the architecture firm Dyrø and Moen and interior architect Krohnark, Allstad is developing a bright and modern office complex directly opposite the Oslo Stock Exchange, with views of the fjord and the Opera House. The project will also be more closely integrated with the neighbouring property at Fred. Olsens gate 1 through public-facing amenities, shared facilities such as a corporate restaurant, and car and bicycle parking.
How Rådhusgata 1 will be transformed
Starting in summer 2026, the entire building will be vacated, two floors will be demolished, and two new top floors will be built. Once the commencement permit is in place, the building will be transformed with:

A boost for Kvadraturen and central Oslo
The complete rehabilitation of Rådhusgata 1 will be part of the significant boost currently taking place in Kvadraturen. The area is characterised by historic buildings, but we are also seeing a marked renewal. The addresses here are becoming one of Oslo’s most attractive places for working life, shopping and dining, with new offerings emerging all the time, right in the district where Christian IV developed his Renaissance city after the city fire of 1624.
– The development represents a clear improvement in quality in the lower part of Kvadraturen, with better connections to the city and more activity at street level. In the surrounding area, we are seeing businesses, cultural institutions and restaurants moving in, says Skøien.
The building will undergo extensive upgrading through the second quarter of 2028.
– Modern material choices, well-considered architectural solutions and new technology will make the building a natural first choice for tenants who set high standards for both quality and location, says Nordby Skøien
Property owner Allstad sets high standards for the environment and sustainability. This includes entirely new technical systems and energy solutions. The transformation also involves durable material choices, as well as partially reusing the property’s existing materials. Nevertheless, no one should be in any doubt: after the upgrade, Rådhusgata 1 will appear as an entirely new building.
