School Farm Project at Rauland Vicarage

In Norwegian schools, there are many pupils who do not manage everyday school life and are at risk of dropping out. It is therefore positive when individual municipalities can consider teaching in a completely different setting.

Vinje Municipality has agreed to start a preliminary project and explore the possibilities of establishing a school farm at Rauland Vicarage. OVF is pleased about this. The ochre-yellow vicarage in Telemark has a tenant farmer’s residence, a storehouse and a courtyard that ties the farm together and creates a meeting place. The surroundings, with nature as the closest neighbour, the inherent value of the vicarage and trusted adults help provide a good foundation for mastering tasks and gaining greater self-confidence.

There are already school farm projects at the Solum, Stokke and Hommedal vicarages, backed by the municipalities responsible for the educational programmes.

School farm projects are both empowering and community-building. Research has shown that, for the individual, school days under different conditions can be a lifeline. It is positive that OVF’s buildings are being given a new lease of life and can make a difference. So far, OVF’s property portfolio has identified 30 vicarages that may be suitable as school farms. This will not be the last time the foundation highlights the potential found in the vicarages.
